Peter Gene Hernandez aka Bruno Mars was born on October 8, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is the son of, Pete, a Latin percussionist, and his mother, Bernadette, a singer. Mars received his nickname, Bruno, at the age of 2 from his father because of his resemblance to professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino. Bruno never took any music lessons. He grew up around entertainers hence he became familiar with playing instruments and singing at a very young age."I've always had a drum set, a piano, a guitar ... and never got trained to play. It was just always there," Bruno recalled. "That's just how I learned, just being surrounded by it my whole life." At the age of 4, he joined the family musical act as an Elvis impersonator and now he impersonates the king of pop Michael Jackson. In 1990, Mars was featured in MidWeek as "Little Elvis", he appeared in a cameo role in the film Honeymoon in Vegas (1992) and performed in the halftime show of the 1990 Aloha Bowl.
Mars graduated from Roosevelt High School, where he formed band (School Boys). Mars began performing at a very young age which made him comfortable on stage. It was like a day to day thing for him. He grew up performing with his family band.
After graduation Bruno moved to Los Angeles, California. In his first few years he struggled a lot. During these tough times he turned to song writer. "I only started writing songs when I moved up to L.A. because when I was in Hawaii, I never really needed to," Bruno shared. "But it stemmed from just learning that you have to do everything by yourself. It's not like what you see in movies, where you walk into a record company and you're given all these great songs to sing. You have to write the song the world is going to want to hear and play it over and over again. I learned that the hard way here in L.A."
Songwriter Phillip Lawrence met Bruno through a mutual friend. Phillip and Bruno composed a song but the record company wanted one of their own artists to perform it so eventually they ended up selling the song to make some money. Mars was disappointed but he continued writing and producing songs for other artists. He wrote songs for established artists like Flo Rida (Right 'Round), Brandy (Long Distance) and Travie McCoy (Billionaire) and co-wrote K'Naan (Wavin' Flag), the theme song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Bruno wrote the song ‘Nothin' on You’ for B.o.B but the record label insisted Bruno to sing it. The song became a smash hit and made it to No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart. Overnight Bruno became a pop sensation. Bruno released his first solo single, ‘Just the Way You Are’ from his debut studio album, 2010’s Doo-Wops .The album reached No. 3 on the Billboard album charts.
